Russell dominated at the Red Bull Ring. He took pole ahead of Norris to cut his title deficit, and the Feature was started behind the safety car, a decision attributed to recurring issues with the new car. Russell pitted under a later caution and took the lead outright when Markelov, the last to make his mandatory stop, finally came in, winning by around five seconds. There were two safety cars across the race, including one for Delétraz's clash with Aitken at Turn 1. Behind Norris, Fuoco produced the move of the day, passing Merhi around the outside on the final lap to take the final podium spot and deny the MP man, while Markelov stormed back to eighth and snatched reverse-grid pole at the last corner. The Sprint belonged to Markelov, who led every lap from pole to win by over five seconds. Russell's charge was the story behind him: he picked off Norris, then Fuoco, then Albon and Makino to climb to second, a result that handed him the championship lead at the season's halfway point. Sette Câmara completed the podium.
