The Story

Monaco split qualifying into two groups, and Leclerc topped it for pole, looking set to convert it into a commanding win. He led by around six seconds when the race turned on a safety car. A crash for Visoiu and Delétraz at Mirabeau sprang a pit trap: PREMA pitted Leclerc just before the safety car was formally deployed, while Rowland, Markelov and Matsushita stopped under safety-car pace and kept track position, dropping the leader to fourth. A loose, vibrating left-front then forced Leclerc back to the pits, and he retired with suspected suspension damage, his title lead slashed to three points. Rowland inherited the lead and held off Markelov to win, with Matsushita third, Albon fourth and Ghiotto fifth. PREMA were investigated for an unsafe release. Sunday's Sprint was a cleaner affair: de Vries passed Rapax team-mate Cecotto into Turn 1 on the opening lap, pulled clear and controlled it to win. Cecotto faded on his tyres and backed the pack up, with Malja holding off Ghiotto for third throughout. Markelov passed Albon near La Rascasse for fifth. Leclerc, starting from the back, retired again.
