The Story

The new Formula 2 era opened under the Sakhir lights, and Leclerc announced himself with pole on debut, heading a PREMA front-row lockout with Fuoco. But the Feature belonged to strategy. Nato undercut Leclerc, pitting earlier for fresh softs and slicing past the moment the Monegasque rejoined. Then Markelov, running a longer middle stint and nursing his tyres, surged late: he picked off Leclerc, hunted down Nato and stole the lead at Turn 4 to win, with Nato second and Leclerc third. Sette Câmara took a five-second penalty for forcing a rival off. On Sunday's Sprint, reverse-grid pole-sitter Matsushita was forced to start from the pit lane with a mechanical problem. Leclerc, starting sixth, ran an audacious Plan B: he built a lead on mediums, pitted for softs, dropped deep into the field, then scythed back through, far quicker on fresh rubber, using DRS to clear Rowland. He grabbed the win on the final lap when Ghiotto ran wide at Turn 4 while defending. Ghiotto held on for second, Rowland third. A safety car had earlier been triggered when Nato suffered a puncture and spun out. Leclerc and Markelov left Bahrain locked together at the top.
