The Story

Around the walls of Baku, Matsushita took a fine pole for Carlin. At the start de Vries pounced, slipping past into Turn 1 to build an early lead, but the pit stops decided the day: a slow stop for the Dutchman let Aitken undercut him cleanly on the out-lap to seize control. The street circuit bit hard. Alesi tangled with Trident team-mate Boschung at the first corner to bring out an early safety car, and a later restart brought chaos when Ghiotto spun Sette Câmara, both Sette Câmara and Delétraz retiring on the spot. Ghiotto was handed a five-second penalty for the clash. King pounced around the outside of Turn 3 late on for third. Aitken won for Campos from de Vries and King, with Latifi fourth. Sunday's Sprint was a stop-start affair run to time with several safety-car interruptions. Latifi took the lead before mid-distance and held off Correa and de Vries to win, Correa taking a fine second and Aitken third. Ghiotto crashed out. Latifi extended his championship lead.
