The Story

Baku delivered the chaos the street circuit promised. Albon took pole for DAMS ahead of Norris and Russell. In the Feature, Russell drew alongside Albon into Turn 1 and briefly led, but Albon hit back at once. The race then turned on strategy and two safety cars — the first for Ghiotto in the wall on the opening lap, the second for Nissany's crash — with a tense restart that saw Russell brake deep, Albon run wide and Fuoco pounce for the lead. Albon reclaimed the front to win, with Aitken passing Fuoco late for second and Fuoco completing the podium plus fastest lap. Attrition was brutal: Markelov retired with a smoking engine, de Vries dropped out late, and Norris, who had stalled and started from the pit lane, salvaged sixth. The Sprint produced more drama still. Five drivers failed to get away cleanly off the line, Albon among them. Russell carved through from twelfth, slipstreaming past Sette Câmara to take a win the FIA noted as his first in the category, in strong winds. Sette Câmara crossed second but was disqualified for insufficient fuel, promoting de Vries to second ahead of Latifi after a fierce duel. Norris held on as championship leader.
