The Story

Formula 2's new era opened at Sakhir with the debut of the Dallara F2 2018 and its Mecachrome engine. Norris put Carlin on pole, edging Russell, Albon and de Vries. A grid stall by Markelov and Merhi forced a second formation lap that trimmed the Feature, but Norris simply drove away from it, controlling the race to win by several seconds. Behind, Sette Câmara made the most of a sluggish Russell start to take second, while Markelov produced the recovery of the day, scything forward from the back to snatch third with a DRS move on Albon and a final-lap switchback to hold off the cars ahead. Russell salvaged fifth. The Sprint, off the reversed grid, was littered with stalls at the start, with both ART cars among those caught out. de Vries led early but Prema gambled on an early stop, mirroring Leclerc's 2017 winning move; this time it backfired and dropped him deep into the pack. That handed the race to Markelov, who managed his tyres superbly to win from Günther, who recovered despite locking up, with Sette Câmara third and Norris fourth after a misfire. Norris left Bahrain leading the standings.
