MP Motorsport is the quietly relentless Dutch operation that turned a family karting project into one of the junior single-seater paddock's most respected outfits. Run out of Westmaas in the south of the Netherlands, the team spent two decades sharpening its craft in feeder categories before delivering the prize that defines it: the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Drivers' and Teams' titles, won emphatically with Felipe Drugovich. It is a squad built on patience and engineering discipline rather than budget — a giant-killer that learned to win at the very top of the ladder beneath Formula 1.

Origins

The team was founded in 1995 by Cock Kool under the name MultiPromo, originally simply to give his sons a vehicle to go karting. From those domestic beginnings the operation grew into a professional racing team, anchored at its Westmaas base in the Netherlands. MP cut its teeth in national and regional formulae — Dutch Formula Ford championships came early, with titles in 2000 and 2002 — before stepping up to Formula Renault 2.0 in 2003, the category in which it built much of its reputation for developing young talent.

The climb

MP Motorsport's defining trait is its steady, rung-by-rung ascent of the single-seater ladder. After Formula Renault it expanded into Auto GP in 2011 and then graduated to the GP2 Series — Formula 1's direct support category — in 2013. When the junior pyramid was restructured, MP moved into the GP3 Series in 2018 and carried that entry into the new FIA Formula 3 Championship when it launched in 2019. Across these years the team became a finishing school for fast youngsters: drivers such as Richard Verschoor, Liam Lawson, Dennis Hauger and, later, Franco Colapinto all spent formative time in MP machinery. Parallel programmes in Spanish Formula 4 produced a steady stream of champions — Verschoor, Christian Lundgaard and others — reinforcing MP's identity as a developer of drivers as much as a race winner.

2022 — champions

The breakthrough that elevated MP from respected midfielder to title-winner came in 2022. Pairing with Felipe Drugovich, who had joined the team's Formula 2 effort, MP produced a campaign of ruthless consistency. The Brazilian racked up wins and podiums to clinch the FIA Formula 2 Drivers' Championship, and his haul — backed by the team's second car — carried MP to the FIA Formula 2 Teams' Championship in the same season. It was the team's first major title at the highest rung of the F1 feeder system and a vindication of its long, methodical climb. Drugovich went on to become an Aston Martin Formula 1 reserve driver, underlining the calibre of the programme that launched him.

Identity

MP Motorsport's character is unmistakably that of an independent, family-rooted Dutch team that punches above its financial weight. It has never been the flashiest name on the grid, but it has consistently turned raw young drivers into winners and, in 2022, into champions. Today it remains a fixture of both the FIA Formula 2 and FIA Formula 3 grids, continuing to combine driver development with the kind of engineering rigour that delivered its landmark double crown.
