Oscar Piastri is an Australian racing driver whose single-seater junior career is one of the most decorated of his generation, defined by an unbroken run of championships across three consecutive seasons that culminated in back-to-back rookie titles in FIA Formula 3 and FIA Formula 2.

Formula Renault

Before reaching the FIA junior pyramid, Piastri won the 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup with R-ace GP, taking seven wins and five pole positions and clinching the title by 7.5 points over Victor Martins. It was the first link in a championship-winning streak that would carry him all the way to Formula 1.

Formula 3

Piastri moved to FIA Formula 3 in 2020 with PREMA Racing and won the title at the first attempt. He scored two victories and six podiums across the season, finishing on 164 points. The championship came down to the final round at Mugello, where a seventh place in the sprint race was enough to edge Theo Pourchaire by just three points, with Logan Sargeant a further point back in third. Winning F3 as a rookie marked Piastri as one of the standout prospects on the junior ladder.

Formula 2

He stayed with PREMA Racing for a promotion to FIA Formula 2 in 2021 and, remarkably, won that championship in his rookie season too. Piastri amassed 252.5 points, taking six wins from eleven podiums and five pole positions, and finished 60.5 points clear of teammate Robert Shwartzman. He closed the year with a run of feature-race victories and sealed the title at the Yas Marina finale, becoming the first rookie F2 champion since George Russell. The back-to-back rookie crowns in F3 and F2 made him the only driver to have won Formula Renault, Formula 3 and Formula 2 (or equivalents) in three successive seasons.

After F2

With no F1 seat immediately available, Piastri spent 2022 as a reserve and test driver, completing thousands of kilometres in private running. That year also produced a famous contract saga: Alpine publicly announced him for 2023, only for Piastri to reject the claim and state he had not signed with the team. The FIA's Contract Recognition Board ultimately cleared his move to McLaren, where he made his Formula 1 debut in 2023.
