2026 Spanish GP: Norris had Madrid's fastest car and lost the race in the three laps of the VSC

Pole by 0.011, 15 laps in front and the best median of the day. A VSC called a couple of seconds after he passed the pit entry cost Norris 21.9 s in three laps; Antonelli won by 4.351 s. And Colapinto held off Piastri for 15 laps on 43-lap-old hards.

Kimi Antonelli won the first Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring by 4.351 seconds over Max Verstappen, with Lando Norris third at 5.089. That is what the classification says. The data says something else: Norris took pole by 0.011, led the first 15 laps, pulled 6.3 seconds on Antonelli before anything happened and set the best clean-lap median of the afternoon, the only one under 1:38. What he didn't get was a pit stop under the Virtual Safety Car: when Stroll's Aston Martin stopped at Turn 20 and Race Control neutralised the race on lap 14, Norris had already passed the pit entry. Antonelli and Verstappen, running behind him, came in; he did one more lap at VSC pace and stopped as the neutralisation was ending.

Qualifying

Pole went to Norris with 1:31.824, by 0.011 over Antonelli; Verstappen was at +0.140, Hamilton at +0.189, Leclerc at +0.195 and Russell at +0.325: six drivers in three tenths and a quarter. Piastri was seventh at +0.470, Lawson eighth at +0.492 and Colapinto put the Alpine into Q3 with the ninth time at +1.079, while Gasly was left 14th. The grid moved at the back: Sainz lost three places for impeding Bottas — "the team failed to inform the driver," says the document — and started 20th; Stroll dropped 40 places for power-unit elements and started 21st; Bearman started from the pit lane. Leclerc received a reprimand for the delta on his in-lap in Q3, with an unusual clarification from the stewards: Ferrari loaded a miscalculated delta and "the team is exclusively at fault." The times, lap by lap, are in the race hub's Q.

By teams, Saturday was the tightest of the year among the top four: McLaren ahead, Mercedes at +0.012%, Red Bull at +0.152% and Ferrari at +0.206% — the previous minimum for that spread was 0.347%, at Monza. Behind them, Alpine (+1.175%, with Colapinto), Racing Bulls (+1.325%), Audi (+1.524%) and Haas (+2.007%) formed the second group; Williams (+3.799%), Aston Martin (+3.881%) and Cadillac (+4.453%), the third.

The race in four acts

Act 1 — thirteen laps of control. Norris held the start and Antonelli, looking for a way past, cut the first chicane twice; Verstappen took the chance to move up to second and on lap 4, on instruction from the pit wall and with Hamilton complaining, gave the place back to the Mercedes. Further back, Piastri and Russell touched on the opening lap: the McLaren dropped from 7th to 10th with a damaged front wing. Hamilton, fourth on the grid, lost his brakes — "I had hit the brake, the car started stopping and then the pedal took a step," he said — fell to tenth on lap 5 and retired on lap 7. Up front the race belonged to Norris: 6.348 seconds over Antonelli on lap 13, with medians of 1:39.374 against 1:39.701 on the same mediums; Verstappen, on softs, 1:39.894; Leclerc and Russell, on hards, 1:40.049 and 1:40.031.

Act 2 — two seconds. Stroll stopped at Turn 20 with brake problems after 12 laps and on lap 14 Race Control deployed the Virtual Safety Car: 123 seconds of neutralisation, from 15:27:18 to 15:29:21 local time according to its messages. "The timing of the Virtual Safety Car was a couple of seconds too late — Lando had already passed the pit entry," explained Andrea Stella. Nine cars came in on that lap — Antonelli, Verstappen, Russell, Colapinto, Hülkenberg, Lindblad, Ocon, Albon and Pérez —; Norris did lap 15 at VSC pace and came in as the neutralisation was ending, with the track going green again. His trip through the pit lane took 35.1 seconds against Antonelli's 31.8 and Verstappen's 31.0 — F1.com counted seven seconds stationary — and he came out fifth, behind Leclerc, who had not stopped, Antonelli, Verstappen and Russell. "I was the only one on the whole grid who doesn't get a pit stop," he said afterwards. The full account: between laps 14 and 16 Leclerc, without stopping, accumulated 341.808 seconds; Antonelli, stopping under the VSC, 351.018, a toll of 9.2; Norris, 372.964, a toll of 31.2. A green-flag stop costs about 25.7 seconds at the Madring — Russell paid 25.713 on lap 28, Leclerc 25.783 on lap 48 —, so the VSC gave each of the nine a 16.5-second discount and charged Norris five and a half extra. The windows and the toll of every stop are in the Strategy Room.

Act 3 — Leclerc's train. Ferrari left Leclerc out on the hards he had started on, betting on a Safety Car that never came, and the Monegasque led 32 laps, from 16 to 47, with Antonelli between 0.852 (lap 20) and 3.7 seconds (lap 30) behind and without a single concrete attempt; the Mercedes even lost a lap time for track limits at Turn 6 on lap 23, searching. Over that stretch — laps 17 to 47, 31 clean laps each and the same air — Norris' median was 1:37.705; Verstappen's 1:38.030, Antonelli's 1:38.057 and Leclerc's 1:38.161 on tyres fourteen laps older. Norris cut his deficit to Antonelli from 15.723 to 4.722 by lap 42, and there he found Verstappen at 0.851: over the next 16 laps he was never more than 1.03 seconds behind and never able to pass. Russell ran the opposite race, two stops (14 and 28), and made the only on-track pass among the top six after the VSC: on Lawson, on lap 35, on hards nearly 30 laps fresher.

Act 4 — clean air. Leclerc came in at the end of lap 48 for softs and rejoined fourth, 24 seconds behind Norris at the flag. Antonelli inherited the lead with 0.868 over Verstappen and 1.466 over Norris, and in clean air showed what the train had hidden: 1:36.561, 1:36.561, 1:36.597, 1:36.197 and 1:36.080 on laps 49 to 53, 0.476 a lap faster than Verstappen over that stretch, and his best lap of the race on the final tour (1:36.030). The final margin was 4.351; Norris crossed 0.738 behind Verstappen — with a lap time deleted on lap 54 for track limits at Turn 6 — and the fastest lap was Russell's, 1:35.587 on lap 49 on 20-lap-old hards. The telemetry of those laps shows where the Mercedes found the time once it stopped breathing dirty air.

McLaren's median is Norris'; Piastri's was 1:39.043, 1.083 seconds a lap slower with the wing damaged from lap 1. Mercedes' is Antonelli's; Russell, on a two-stop, 1:38.265. Alpine's is Gasly's, who ran 55 laps on the same set of hards; Colapinto's, 1:39.664, counts thirteen laps of mediums behind Lawson. Ferrari adds up to a single car: Hamilton left three clean laps. Four teams within 0.218% is the closest race of the year among the top four (previous season minimum: 0.370%).

With 28.7°C air and 50.1°C track, degradation never showed up: Colapinto's hards improved by 0.049 seconds a lap across 42 laps, Antonelli's and Verstappen's by 0.051, and the fastest lap of the race was set on a 20-lap-old set. Four cars retired: Hamilton (brakes, lap 7), Stroll (brakes at Turn 20, after 12 laps, the origin of the VSC), Pérez (after 31 laps, suspected water-system issue) and Sainz (after 43 laps, having served 5 seconds for contact with Alonso at Turn 5).

Colapinto against Piastri

Colapinto started ninth and was already seventh on the opening lap: he passed Lawson at the start and inherited the place of Piastri, who had just touched Russell. Lawson took it back on lap 10 and the Alpine came in under the VSC for hards, which left it tenth behind Gasly and Bortoleto, who had not stopped. There he ran 32 laps glued to the Audi — the stewards gave Bortoleto a warning for moving under braking at Turn 5 and forcing him off the track — while Piastri, who didn't stop either and carried on with the hards he started on, ran seventh and pulled as much as 24.3 seconds on him by lap 41.

McLaren stopped Piastri on lap 42 for new mediums, with 24 seconds in hand and a stop that cost him 25.9, and the Australian rejoined 0.859 behind Colapinto, even behind Lindblad for a lap. What followed were 15 laps of 29- to 43-lap-old hards against 1- to 15-lap-old mediums: Colapinto's clean median over that stretch was 1:38.299, Piastri's 1:38.414. The McLaren lost two lap times for track limits on laps 45 and 46 and got the black-and-white flag on lap 50; the gap grew from 0.365 on lap 46 to 3.148 on lap 53. On lap 55 Gasly came out of the pits ahead of Colapinto and the Argentine lapped in 1:40.851, nearly three seconds slower than on the following lap: Piastri was down to 0.561. Lap 56 put things back in their place — 1:38.015 against 1:38.714 — and the flag came with 1.558 between them. "This isn't the kind of track that suits our cars best. Even so, we did an incredible job to score a lot of points," said Colapinto; about the laps behind Bortoleto he was more direct: "It was frustrating when I was behind slower cars and couldn't overtake them."

The stewards: plenty of paper, no positions

Madrid produced 35 stewards' documents and only two time penalties, neither with an effect on the classification. Sainz received 5 seconds for moving under braking at Turn 5 and touching Alonso — the baseline for that infringement is a black-and-white flag; the contact raised it to a penalty — and served them in the pits before retiring. Gasly received 5 seconds for exceeding the pit lane limit by 1.2 km/h at his lap-55 stop, notified after the flag: he finished 12th with or without them.

The rest is paper: Leclerc's reprimand for the Q3 delta with the blame placed on the team, three places for Sainz for impeding Bottas, 40 for Stroll for power-unit elements; warnings for Antonelli and Bortoleto over deltas, for Bortoleto again over the contact with Colapinto — "the equivalent to a black/white flag," the document clarifies —, and for Albon, Russell and Bottas over rejoining the track; pit-lane speeding fines for Pérez (two), Norris and Tsunoda. The lap-1 Piastri-Russell contact and Antonelli's two cut chicanes produced no document.

Context: upgrades and the championship

The FIA registered 10 upgrades across six teams for Madrid; the other five declared nothing. Mercedes brought three (rear wing, exhaust tailpipe and front brake drum), Red Bull two (rear corner and floor bib), Cadillac two, and McLaren, Ferrari and Alpine one each: a rear wing, a rear suspension and a floor board. Six of the ten items are performance, two circuit-specific and two reliability. The team that brought a single wing set the best median; the one that brought three won the race with the third.

In the championship, Antonelli has 292 points and leads Russell (211) by 81, with Hamilton (191), Norris (186), Leclerc (167) and Verstappen (145) behind; Piastri has 120. Mercedes has 503 in the constructors' against Ferrari's 358, McLaren's 306 and Red Bull's 230. Eight rounds remain. It was Antonelli's eighth win of the year according to F1.com, and the first Formula 1 race in Madrid in 45 years according to AP. Hamilton, who retired, summed it up for Sky Sports: "there's no stopping" Antonelli.

The hypotheses, in short

1. The race was decided in three laps, not 57. Norris lost 21.9 seconds to Antonelli between laps 14 and 16 and recovered 10.8 over the remaining 41 while being 0.352 a lap faster. Without the VSC — or with the VSC a couple of seconds earlier — the sums were different.

2. The Madring didn't allow passing between equals. The four cars up front ran 42 laps without an on-track pass; Norris spent 16 laps within 1.03 of Verstappen; Antonelli, 32 within 3.7 of Leclerc; Piastri, 15 within 3.2 of Colapinto on tyres 28 laps fresher. With zero degradation, track position was worth more than pace.

3. Antonelli won with the third-best pace of the afternoon. His median was 0.152% off Norris' and 0.036% off Verstappen's; in clean air, at the end, he was almost half a second a lap faster than the Red Bull. The Mercedes had more than it showed in the train — but the number that ordered the podium is 9.2 against 31.2.
