Trident is one of the busiest and most quietly successful operations on the FIA single-seater ladder. Run from the small Piedmontese town of San Pietro Mosezzo in northern Italy, the team has fielded one of the largest rosters of any squad of its era — roughly forty-six different drivers across FIA Formula 2 and FIA Formula 3 since 2017. For years a midfield-to-front runner, Trident finally converted its volume of talent into silverware, winning the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Teams' Championship and then a remarkable run of consecutive F3 drivers' titles.
Origins
Trident was founded in 2006 by Maurizio Salvadori, who remains the team principal, to compete in the newly created GP2 Series. The team's racing identity was forged in those early GP2 years and in the GP2 Asia Series (2008–2011), the winter championship that ran alongside the main series. In 2012 Trident expanded into GP3, the third-tier feeder category, where it built a reputation as a developmental platform for rising single-seater talent. When GP2 was rebranded as FIA Formula 2 in 2017 and GP3 gave way to the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2019, Trident carried that heritage straight into the modern junior-formula pyramid.
A junior-formula mainstay
Few teams have run as many drivers as Trident. Its willingness to fill two- and three-car entries season after season — in F2 from 2017 and in F3 from 2019 — has made it a constant presence on the grid and a steady source of opportunity for young drivers climbing toward Formula 1. That breadth explains the team's unusually high tally of distinct drivers, one of the largest counts of any squad in the period. The trade-off was consistency: Trident long sat in the competitive midfield, capable of strong results and podiums but, in Formula 2, never quite assembling a championship campaign. The team's first FIA Formula 2 feature-style breakthrough win came courtesy of Richard Verschoor, and across these seasons Trident remained a fixture rather than a serial winner at F2 level.
2021 F3 title
The team's defining achievement arrived in the FIA Formula 3 Championship. In 2021 Trident won the F3 Teams' Championship — its first teams' title in the category — with a strong line-up led by Jack Doohan and Clément Novalak, alongside David Schumacher. Doohan finished runner-up in the drivers' standings and Novalak third, the kind of collective points-scoring depth that wins a teams' title. That breakthrough proved to be the start of something larger. From 2023 Trident produced three consecutive FIA Formula 3 drivers' champions: Gabriel Bortoleto in 2023 (the first South American to win the F3 title), Leonardo Fornaroli in 2024 (famously crowned champion without a single race win), and Rafael Cámara as a rookie in 2025. That run cemented Trident as one of the benchmark teams of the modern F3 era.
Identity
Trident's identity is that of a true junior-formula specialist: Italian-rooted, prolific, and patient. Where some teams chase a single marquee signing, Trident has built its name on volume, development and continuity under long-serving principal Maurizio Salvadori. The 2021 F3 Teams' Championship and the subsequent hat-trick of drivers' titles transformed a perennial midfield mainstay into a championship-winning institution — proof that a steady hand and a deep bench can, in the feeder series, eventually beat the bigger names.
