Jenzer Motorsport is a Swiss junior single-seater team whose name became a fixture of the European feeder ladder long before the modern FIA Formula 3 Championship existed. Founded in 1993 by Andreas Jenzer and based in Lyss, near Bern, the squad built its reputation as a steady, development-minded outfit that gave young drivers a competitive platform to climb the pyramid toward Formula 1. Across the GP3 Series and then FIA F3, Jenzer ran as an independent operation rather than a manufacturer-backed superteam, and that identity defined its place in the paddock.
Origins
The team was established in 1993 by Andreas Jenzer, who remained its guiding figure throughout its single-seater journey. Operating out of Lyss, Switzerland, Jenzer Motorsport spent its early years competing across regional formulae, building know-how in categories such as Formula Renault and Formula Abarth before stepping up to the FIA-supported international ladder. That grounding in junior racing shaped the team's later approach: methodical driver development over headline-grabbing budgets.
A GP3/F3 fixture
Jenzer's international breakthrough came with the GP3 Series, where it competed from the category's early seasons in 2010 through to 2018 — a near-decade-long run that made it one of the championship's longest-serving entrants. GP3 was the team's true proving ground: Nico Müller took an early podium in 2010, Patric Niederhauser scored wins in 2012, and Alessio Lorandi added a sprint-race victory at Barcelona in 2017, among others who passed through the cars.
When GP3 was rebranded into the FIA Formula 3 Championship for 2019, Jenzer made the transition and continued for six consecutive seasons, from 2019 through 2024. Its standout chapter came immediately: future Formula 1 racer Yuki Tsunoda drove for the team in that inaugural 2019 campaign, scoring a race win and several podiums. Later seasons featured talents such as Taylor Barnard, who went on to Formula E. The team did not win an FIA Formula 3 teams' or drivers' title during this era, instead playing the role of a respected independent giving young drivers seat time at the sport's third tier. Jenzer departed the FIA F3 grid after the 2024 season, with Andreas Jenzer marking the farewell to the championship.
Identity
Jenzer Motorsport's legacy rests on continuity and graduate pedigree rather than silverware. As a Swiss family-run team it became a recognisable independent across GP3 and FIA F3, and its alumni — most notably Yuki Tsunoda — underline its role as a genuine stepping stone on the road toward Formula 1.
