HWA RACELAB

HWA Racelab was the FIA Formula 2 and Formula 3 entry of HWA AG, the Affalterbach engineering house carrying perhaps the most prestigious surname in German motorsport: the "A" in AMG. Built on the bloodline of Hans Werner Aufrecht and a deep Mercedes-AMG heritage, HWA arrived in the junior single-seater ladder with serious pedigree but stayed only briefly, contesting F3 from 2019 to 2021 and F2 from 2020 to 2021 before withdrawing from both championships. It won no teams' titles in either series, and its grid slot ultimately passed to another team.

Origins — the AMG bloodline

HWA AG was founded in 1999 by Hans Werner Aufrecht, the same Hans Werner Aufrecht who, with Erhard Melcher, had created AMG back in 1967 — the legendary Mercedes tuning house whose name is an acronym of Aufrecht, Melcher, Großaspach. When Aufrecht sold his majority stake in AMG to DaimlerChrysler in the late 1990s, the racing department and bespoke vehicle operations were spun off into HWA AG. The company became the operational backbone of Mercedes-AMG's works motorsport, running the manufacturer's hugely successful DTM campaigns (multiple teams' championships across the 2000s and 2010s with drivers like Bernd Schneider, Gary Paffett and Pascal Wehrlein) and managing Mercedes' factory entry into Formula E in 2018–19 before the works Mercedes EQ identity took over. That is the lineage HWA carried into Formula 2 and Formula 3.

The F2/F3 chapter

HWA was named among the ten inaugural teams of the rebranded FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2019. For Formula 2, it first partnered with Arden International in 2019, then took over Arden's entry outright for 2020, racing as HWA Racelab. Its junior years were a steep climb: in F2 the team cycled through drivers including Artem Markelov, Giuliano Alesi, Jake Hughes, Théo Pourchaire, Matteo Nannini, Alessio Deledda and substitutes such as Jack Aitken and Logan Sargeant, but never escaped the lower half of the order. In F3 across three seasons it collected a handful of wins and podiums without contending for the title. In October 2021 HWA confirmed it would leave both championships at the end of the season; its F3 assets were bought by Van Amersfoort Racing, and the Dutch outfit also took over HWA's F2 entry for 2022 — making VAR the direct successor to HWA's grid slot.

Identity

HWA Racelab is best understood as a prestigious German engineering powerhouse making a short, hard apprenticeship in the single-seater ladder. The AMG-rooted brand and DTM/Formula E credentials never fully translated into junior-formula results, and after just three campaigns HWA stepped back — its place on the grid inherited by Van Amersfoort Racing.
