Hitech

Hitech Grand Prix is a British single-seater team based at Silverstone that became one of the most prolific talent factories on the FIA's ladder to Formula 1, fielding entries in FIA Formula 3 since 2019 and FIA Formula 2 since 2020. Relaunched in 2015 by former world karting champion Oliver Oakes, Hitech built a reputation for handing rising stars their first taste of the F2/F3 paddock — without ever quite landing a teams' title in either championship — while its founder went on to a brief, high-profile spell as a Formula 1 team principal.

Origins

The Hitech name dates back to 2002, when Dennis Rushen and David Hayle founded Hitech Racing as a British Formula 3 outfit. The modern incarnation was born in 2015, when Hayle partnered with Oliver Oakes to form Hitech Grand Prix Ltd and enter the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. Oakes — the 2005 World Karting champion and a one-time Red Bull junior — brought the ambition that would carry the team onto the FIA's premier junior ladder. From its Silverstone base, the team expanded across multiple categories, but its FIA Formula 3 (2019 onward) and FIA Formula 2 (2020 onward) programmes became its calling card.

A junior-formula contender

Hitech arrived in the revamped FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2019, immediately competitive and a regular podium presence. It graduated to FIA Formula 2 in 2020, taking race wins in its debut season but finishing mid-pack in the teams' standings. Across the early 2020s the squad was a perennial contender for victories rather than championships, repeatedly producing flashes of front-running pace without converting them into a teams' crown. Its strongest F2 campaign came in 2025, when — newly aligned with Toyota Gazoo Racing and running two rookies, Williams junior Luke Browning and Ferrari junior Dino Beganovic — Hitech finished runner-up in the teams' standings, its best result in the category. Crucially, in the FIA F2/F3 era the team has not won a teams' championship in either series.

Drivers & near-misses

Hitech's enduring legacy is the drivers it launched. Across its junior programmes it played a part in the early careers of future Grand Prix drivers including George Russell, Alex Albon, Liam Lawson and Oliver Bearman. In FIA Formula 2, Liam Lawson scored on debut and took a sprint win for the team in 2021; Marcus Armstrong and Jüri Vips carried the colours in 2022. The roster across F2 and F3 spans roughly three dozen distinct drivers, many of whom climbed the ladder toward F1 — a record that underlines Hitech's role as a stepping-stone team even in seasons when silverware proved elusive.

Identity

Hitech's identity is tied as much to its commercial backers as to its racing. From 2023 it raced as Hitech Pulse-Eight following a title partnership with the technology brand Pulse-Eight. For 2025 it linked with Toyota Gazoo Racing to run Toyota juniors, racing under the Hitech TGR banner. Its highest-profile chapter, though, came off-track: founder Oliver Oakes left day-to-day F2/F3 operations to become Alpine's Formula 1 team principal from July 2024, one of the youngest in the sport's history, before resigning in May 2025 — a trajectory from Silverstone junior team to the F1 pit wall that captures Hitech's place at the heart of the modern feeder pyramid.
