Woohyun Shin (신우현, also known as Michael Shin, born 23 August 2004 in Seoul) is a South Korean racing driver, notable as the first driver from South Korea to race in the FIA Formula 3 Championship. He carries that pioneering status with pride, racing in 2026 for a Korean-backed programme.
The climb
Shin's path is unusual: he started karting late — only around the age of 16, during the pandemic, in South Korea — before relocating to the UK. He moved into single-seaters quickly, testing in 2021 and contesting both F4 UAE and British F4 in 2022, taking a maiden win at Brands Hatch with Virtuosi Racing and representing South Korea at the 2022 FIA Motorsport Games. In 2023 he raced Formula Regional Middle East with PREMA and GB3 with Hitech.
Formula 3
Shin made his FIA Formula 3 debut in 2023 with PHM Racing by Charouz, joining for the final three rounds and finishing 32nd without points. He then spent two productive seasons building experience elsewhere — strong runs in Euroformula Open with Team Motopark (sixth in 2024; third in 2025 with four wins and twelve podiums) plus Formula Regional Oceania and Eurocup-3 campaigns — before returning to the F3 grid for a first full season in 2026.
2026 / current season
For 2026 Shin lines up with Hitech Grand Prix (Hitech TGR) in car #23, alongside Jin Nakamura and Fionn McLaughlin. In February 2026 he joined the Genesis Magma Racing Trajectory Programme, Genesis's Korean-led young-driver scheme tied to its sportscar project, and his Hitech car carries Magma branding — a source of personal pride: "To be part of a Korean team as one of the only Korean drivers racing abroad brings great pride." The season has been a difficult, interrupted one: a shoulder injury cost him pre-season testing, he crashed out of the Melbourne feature, then underwent shoulder surgery during the break and recovered in South Korea. Through the early rounds he is yet to score, sitting near the back of the standings, with 2026 framed as a year to prioritise experience and rebuild momentum.
