Origins
Ugo Ugochukwu (full name Ugo Ugochukwu Orlandi) was born on 23 April 2007 in New York City, the son of Italian fashion designer Luca Orlandi and Nigerian model Oluchi Onweagba. American by nationality, he became one of the most closely watched products of the United States' growing single-seater pipeline and, from 2021, a long-standing member of the McLaren Driver Development programme.
Karting and the McLaren years
Ugochukwu's reputation was built in karting. After early American successes — the Micro ROK Cup USA in 2014 and the Florida Winter Tour in 2015 — he relocated to Europe, winning the X30 Mini class of the IAME International Open in 2017. His standout junior title came in 2020 with the FIA Karting OK-Junior European Championship, the result that earned him a place on McLaren's books the following year.
Formula 4 and Formula Regional
Ugochukwu stepped onto the car ladder in 2022, finishing third in the British F4 Championship with Carlin — taking two wins and the Rookie Cup — while also racing Italian F4 with PREMA. In 2023 he was a front-runner across multiple F4 series with PREMA: runner-up in Italian F4, third in F4 UAE and champion of the inaugural Euro 4 Championship. He moved up to the Formula Regional European Championship in 2024, again with PREMA, and that same year won the Macau Grand Prix — reported as the first American victor in 43 years.
Formula 3
Ugochukwu graduated to the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2025 with PREMA Racing. It proved a demanding rookie campaign: he finished 16th on 43 points, his best results coming via sprint-race podiums at Spa and Budapest. For 2026 he switched to reigning teams' champions Campos Racing, and the change transformed his form.
2026: FIA Formula 3 champion
A feature-race victory in the Melbourne season opener set the tone, beating Freddie Slater, and the title went down to the final race of the year at the Madrid finale (11-13 September 2026): Ugochukwu closed the championship on 159 points, 14 clear of Slater (145) and 50 ahead of Tuukka Taponen (109). At the Madring he finished fourth in the first Feature Race and second in the second, 1.398 seconds behind Taponen, in the race that confirmed the crown; Campos Racing also retained the F3 Teams' Championship. His McLaren association ended in November 2025, and in June 2026 he had a first taste of F1 machinery in a private Alpine A524 test at Monza — hinting at a possible new direction as he pursues his Formula 1 ambitions independently, as one of America's brightest junior prospects.
