Sebastián Montoya

Sebastián "Sebas" Montoya Freydell (born 11 April 2005 in Miami) is a Colombian-American racing driver and the son of Juan Pablo Montoya, seven-time Formula 1 race winner and two-time Indianapolis 500 champion. He has spent his entire career being measured against one of motorsport's most recognisable surnames, and has built his own reputation, in his own words, "on my own merits."

The climb

Montoya joined PREMA in 2020 and worked methodically up the European feeder ladder: Italian and ADAC Formula 4 (4th in the Italian series in 2021 with nine podiums), then Formula Regional European in 2022. That summer he was picked up by the Red Bull Junior Team, becoming a full member for 2023 with the stated aim of reaching F1. He left the Red Bull programme by 2025, later linking up with Fernando Alonso's A14 Management.

Formula 3

He spent two seasons in FIA F3. In 2023 he raced for Hitech Pulse-Eight, finishing 16th with a single podium (P2 in the Melbourne sprint, inherited after a rival's disqualification). For 2024 he switched to Campos Racing and ended 17th, his standout result a hard-fought P2 in the Spa-Francorchamps feature race, where he vaulted from fourth to second by the first corner.

Formula 2

In December 2024, PREMA promoted Montoya to FIA Formula 2 for 2025 alongside fellow rookie Gabriele Minì. He delivered a solid debut campaign: 12th in the standings with 91 points and three podiums, his maiden coming with a P3 in Monaco, followed by P2 finishes at Barcelona and in the Silverstone sprint. He stalled on the formation lap twice early in the year, yet recovered to score top-fives in six of the final seven races.

2026 / current season

Montoya stayed with PREMA for a second F2 season in 2026, now partnering Aston Martin junior Mari Boya after Minì moved to MP Motorsport. Through the opening rounds he sits 12th in the championship with 20 points, his best result a P4 in the Montreal feature. Fittingly, the man leading the title fight is his former teammate Minì. Montoya remains candid about his lineage: "At the end of the day, he's my coach as well," he has said of his father, while acknowledging that the surname means "people always look at you as the son of Juan Pablo Montoya."
