Fionn McLaughlin is a racing driver from Magherafelt in Northern Ireland and a member of the Red Bull Junior Team, who stepped up to the FIA Formula 3 Championship with Hitech in 2026.
Junior career
McLaughlin started karting at the age of five and was winning championships around Ireland by the age of seven, the early signs of a prodigy from a part of the world that rarely produces single-seater talent at the top level. His big break came in August 2024, when Red Bull invited 11 young drivers to a shootout at Jerez in Formula 4 and GP3 machinery; McLaughlin came out on top and was chosen to join the Red Bull Junior Team, instantly placing him within the orbit of Formula 1.
His first full season in cars was a statement. In 2025 he dominated the British Formula 4 Championship with Hitech, taking five wins and clinching the title by 52.5 points while winning the rookie classification by more than 200 — a margin that left no doubt about who the standout newcomer of the year had been. Earlier that winter he had also finished third in the Formula Winter Series, sharpening his racecraft before the British campaign began.
Formula 3
On the back of that British F4 title, Hitech promoted McLaughlin to FIA Formula 3 for 2026, partnering Michael Shin and Jin Nakamura. To shake off any rust before the season opener in Melbourne, he travelled to New Zealand to race in the Formula Regional Oceania Trophy over the winter. He described the step up to F3 as a "big jump" and began his rookie campaign carrying both Red Bull's backing and the weight of being one of the rare top-flight prospects to emerge from Northern Ireland.
