Racing Engineering was a Spanish single-seater team and one of the most respected names of the GP2 era, the championship that served as Formula 1's official feeder before being rebranded as FIA Formula 2. Based in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, in Andalusia, the squad spent more than a decade at the front of GP2 and twice put a driver on top of the championship. When the series became FIA Formula 2 in 2017, Racing Engineering contested a single season under the new name before withdrawing — closing a chapter that, in our FIA-F2-era records, leaves the team with no Formula 2 titles, but with a GP2 heritage few rivals could match.

Origins — GP2

Racing Engineering joined the GP2 Series at its inception in 2005 and quickly established itself as a benchmark team. Across the GP2 years it ran a long line of talented drivers and built a reputation for consistency and racecraft. The team's GP2 record is the foundation of its standing in the sport: two GP2 Drivers' Championships and a string of strong teams' campaigns over more than ten seasons of competition.

A respected GP2 name

In 2008, Giorgio Pantano won the GP2 Drivers' Championship for Racing Engineering, the team's first title at this level. Five years later, Fabio Leimer delivered a second GP2 Drivers' crown in 2013, edging title rival Sam Bird. Beyond its champions, the team developed and ran a notable roster of single-seater talent across its GP2 years, including Lucas di Grassi, Alexander Rossi, Jordan King and Norman Nato — names that underline how central Racing Engineering was to the GP2 paddock.

Final F2 season

When GP2 was rebranded as the FIA Formula 2 Championship for 2017, Racing Engineering entered what would be its only season under the new banner. Its 2017 line-up featured Louis Delétraz, Nyck de Vries and Gustav Malja, and the team finished eighth in the teams' standings. It did not return for 2018, withdrawing from the championship after a single FIA F2 campaign.

Identity

Racing Engineering's identity is rooted in Spain and in the GP2 era. A southern-Spanish operation from Sanlúcar de Barrameda, it built its name not on a long Formula 2 run but on a decade of GP2 success — two drivers' titles and a procession of future stars — before bowing out after the 2017 transition season.
