GP3 and the McLaren years
A McLaren Young Driver Programme member from 2010 to 2019, Nyck de Vries arrived in the GP3 Series in 2016 with ART Grand Prix. He took two wins, at Monza and Yas Marina, a pole position and his first podium at the Red Bull Ring, finishing sixth in the championship on 133 points. It set him up for a step into the FIA Formula 2 Championship the following year.
Formula 2 2017 — a Monaco win on debut season
With McLaren backing, de Vries entered Formula 2 in 2017, beginning the year at Rapax before switching to Racing Engineering mid-season. The highlight was a victory in the Monte Carlo sprint race, the kind of statement result that marks out a talent. He ended the campaign seventh overall on 114 points and was the second-highest-placed rookie in the field.
Formula 2 2018 — building with Prema
For 2018 de Vries moved to Prema Racing and continued his upward curve, taking three wins across the season: the Le Castellet sprint, the Hungary feature race and the Spa feature race. He finished fourth in the standings on 202 points, frustratingly just short of a top-three result, but clearly establishing himself as a championship contender.
Formula 2 2019 — champion at last
De Vries's third season at F2 level, with ART Grand Prix, finally delivered the title. After a slow start he dominated the back half of the year, racking up four wins and five pole positions. He was mathematically crowned 2019 FIA Formula 2 Champion after his victory at the Sochi round, with races to spare, closing the season on 266 points and his maiden major single-seater championship.
After F2/F3
The F2 crown launched de Vries into a wide-ranging professional career. He won the 2020–21 Formula E World Championship with Mercedes-EQ, taking two race wins on the way to 99 points across 15 rounds. He then reached Formula 1, making his debut as a stand-in with Williams at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix, where he scored points by finishing ninth, before a full-time seat the following year.
