Nicholas Latifi, a Canadian driver born in 1995, took a long road through the junior categories before reaching Formula One with Williams Racing. He made his single-seater debut in the 2012 Italian Formula Three Championship and went on to race in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in 2013 and 2014, with a spell in the British series alongside Carlin. His career, however, was defined above all by four full seasons in GP2/Formula 2 with DAMS.
GP2 / Formula 2 with DAMS
Latifi contested his first full GP2 campaign in 2016 with DAMS, finishing 16th with one podium. When the series was rebranded as the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2017, he stayed at DAMS alongside Oliver Rowland. He took his maiden F2 win in the Silverstone sprint race, where he started third, seized the lead at the start and controlled the rest of the race. He ended the year fifth on 178 points, just 13 behind teammate Rowland.
In 2018 he was paired with Alex Albon and the season proved difficult with the new car. Despite a podium in Baku and a victory at Spa-Francorchamps, he finished ninth on 91 points, well adrift of Albon.
His strongest year came in 2019, his fourth season with DAMS, this time alongside Sergio Sette Camara. He started superbly, winning three of the first five races and leading the championship by 30 points. With four wins, eight podiums and four fastest laps, he finished runner-up on 214 points behind Nyck de Vries. His form also helped DAMS to its first GP2/F2 teams' title since 2014.
After F2
His 2019 runner-up finish opened the door to Formula One: Williams promoted Latifi to their senior team for the 2020 season.
