Overview

Maximilian Günther (born 2 July 1997 in Oberstdorf, dual German-Austrian nationality) is a German racing driver best known as a multiple race winner in the all-electric FIA Formula E World Championship. Before that, he built his reputation in the European single-seater ladder, peaking with a strong FIA Formula 3 European campaign and a single season in FIA Formula 2.

Formula 3

Günther was one of the standout talents of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. He took his maiden win at the Norisring in 2015 and finished eighth overall. He stepped up the following years to become a genuine title contender: in 2016 he was championship runner-up with four wins and thirteen podiums, and in 2017 he finished third with five wins and sixteen podiums, racing among a generation that included future F1 drivers.

Formula 2

For 2018 Günther graduated to the FIA Formula 2 Championship with BWT Arden, partnering Nirei Fukuzumi. The season was tough in uncompetitive machinery, but Günther delivered a highlight by controlling the Silverstone sprint race from reverse-grid pole to take his only F2 victory. He finished 14th in the standings with 41 points.

After F2/F3 — Formula E

Günther's career found its true home in Formula E. He made his series debut with Dragon late in the 2018-19 season, then established himself in 2019-20, taking his maiden victory at the Santiago ePrix and becoming, at 22, the youngest race winner in Formula E history at the time. He went on to race for BMW i Andretti, Nissan and DS Penske, collecting multiple wins and podiums and establishing himself as one of the championship's recognised front-runners. His best title campaign came in 2022-23, when he finished seventh overall with a win.
