Anthoine Hubert was a French single-seater driver and a member of the Renault Sport Academy, widely regarded as one of the brightest French talents of his generation. He died on 31 August 2019, aged 22, following an accident during the FIA Formula 2 feature race at Spa-Francorchamps. The FIA Formula 2 rookie of the year award is named in his honour.
Junior career
Hubert progressed through the French karting ranks before moving into single-seaters, winning the French F4 championship in 2013. He went on to race in Formula Renault and then GP3, joining the Renault Sport Academy, which supported his climb up the junior ladder.
GP3 title
In 2018 Hubert claimed the GP3 Series championship with ART Grand Prix, taking the title in a closely fought campaign and earning his promotion to FIA Formula 2 for 2019.
Formula 2
Hubert stepped up to FIA Formula 2 in 2019 with BWT Arden. As the reigning GP3 champion, he made an immediate impact, winning twice — first the feature race at Monaco, one of the most prestigious results on the calendar, and then again at Paul Ricard, his home French round. Those victories marked him out as a rising star with a realistic path toward Formula 1.
Spa-Francorchamps
On 31 August 2019, on the second lap of the F2 feature race at Spa-Francorchamps, Hubert was involved in a multi-car accident at the high-speed Raidillon section. He succumbed to his injuries; he was 22. His death prompted renewed attention to circuit safety and was felt deeply across the motorsport community. He is remembered through the Anthoine Hubert Award, given to the leading F2 rookie each season, and his number 19 was retired in his honour.
