2020 Technical Regulations
2020 was the last year of the 2017-era aero envelope. Cars still ran 13-inch Pirelli slicks, over-car wing-dominated aero and the same 1.6-litre V6 turbo-hybrid architecture introduced in 2014. Mid-season, due to COVID-19, the FIA and teams agreed to postpone the originally-planned 2021 rule reset to 2022, and chassis homologation was extended — 2021 cars would be carryovers on a token-limited development basis.
Aero — continuity with in-season TDs on floor slots
Bodywork envelope carried over from 2019. During the season the FIA issued Technical Directives clarifying legality around floor slots that some teams were using to gain downforce — the well-reported change appeared ahead of an event mid-season. Crash-test requirements and chassis dimensions were not meaningfully revised.
Power unit — final pre-pandemic spec year
V6 turbo-hybrid architecture unchanged. Per-season component pool sizes (ICE, turbocharger, MGU-K, MGU-H, ES, CE) applied as in 2019 with associated grid-penalty framework. No MGU-H development ceiling change.
Safety — biometric gloves mandated
FIA-standard biometric gloves (with embedded pulse-oximetry sensors) became mandatory during this period. Halo remained mandatory. Other survival-cell, seat and helmet-homologation specifications continued without a step change.
The exact calendar year in which biometric gloves became mandatory differs across sources — verify whether the mandate attaches to 2020 specifically or a slightly earlier/later season.
