1987 Sporting Regulations
1987 ran 16 championship rounds. Points 9-6-4-3-2-1 for top 6, best 11 of 16 for drivers. Two additional competitions ran in parallel: the Jim Clark Trophy for drivers of atmospheric 3.5-litre cars, and the Colin Chapman Cup for constructors of the same. These sub-competitions had their own points structure derived from atmospheric-only finishing order. Nelson Piquet won his third title; Jonathan Palmer (Tyrrell-Cosworth) took the Jim Clark Trophy.

Dual championship structure
The main World Championship continued to score 9-6-4-3-2-1 across the full field. The Jim Clark Trophy (drivers) and Colin Chapman Cup (constructors) ranked atmospheric entries within the overall results — not a separate race, just a separate classification slice. The two parallel trophies existed only in 1987 and 1988; from 1989 atmospheric was the only engine formula so the side classifications were retired.
