About Tom Jones

Earl Thomas Jones, an American racing driver born in Dallas, Texas, on April 26, 1943, holds a unique, albeit brief, place in Formula 1 history. His career trajectory, particularly his singular attempt to compete at the pinnacle of motorsport, offers a glimpse into the challenges faced by privateers in the late 1960s.

The Sole Formula 1 Attempt: 1967 Canadian Grand Prix

Jones's sole foray into Formula 1 occurred at the 1967 Canadian Grand Prix. He entered the event with his own Cooper T82, a testament to the era when private entries were still a possibility. During the practice sessions, Jones demonstrated a promising performance, suggesting a competitive pace. However, his qualifying efforts were severely hampered by electrical problems with his car. These issues limited him to setting only one very slow lap time. Consequently, the race stewards made the decision to deny him a place on the starting grid, citing that he was "too slow," despite his earlier competitive showings in practice. This incident marked the end of his direct involvement in a Formula 1 Grand Prix. For many years, Jones remained largely an obscure figure within the sport's extensive history.

Post-Formula 1 Racing and Later Life

While his Formula 1 aspirations were cut short, it has since come to light that Earl Thomas Jones continued his racing career beyond this single F1 attempt. He competed on and off throughout the 1970s in various racing series before ultimately retiring from active competition in 1980. Following his retirement from racing, Jones transitioned into entrepreneurship, establishing and operating a welding and metal fabrication company in Cleveland. Earl Thomas Jones passed away on May 29, 2015, in Eastlake, Ohio, at the age of 72.

Enduring Legacy

A tangible piece of Earl Thomas Jones's racing history endures today. His original Cooper T82, the very car he attempted to qualify for the 1967 Canadian Grand Prix, is still in existence. This historic machine is now actively campaigned by its current owner in various historic racing series, allowing a new generation to witness a piece of motorsport heritage associated with Jones's brief but notable presence.
