About Lance Stroll

Early Career and Junior Success

Lance Stroll, born Lance Strulovitch on October 29, 1998, in Montreal, Canada, began his motorsport career at age ten. The son of Canadian billionaire businessman Lawrence Stroll, who would later own the Aston Martin F1 Team, Lance quickly excelled in karting, securing multiple regional and national titles. Mentored by six-time World Champion Mike Wilson, Stroll joined the Ferrari Driver Academy in 2010. His transition to car racing in 2014 saw him compete in the non-championship Florida Winter Series, achieving two podiums and a pole. In his competitive debut, Stroll clinched the 2014 Italian F4 Championship with Prema Powerteam, securing seven wins, thirteen podiums, and five pole positions. The following year, 2015, he won the New Zealand-based Toyota Racing Series with M2, achieving four wins and ten podiums. He also contested the FIA Formula 3 European Championship with Prema, a team in which his father had acquired a stake. In a field featuring future F1 drivers like Charles Leclerc and George Russell, Stroll claimed one victory and six podiums, finishing fifth overall. By late 2015, Stroll left the Ferrari Driver Academy to become a test driver for Williams. The 2016 season was a highlight of Stroll's junior career. Remaining with Prema for his second FIA Formula 3 European Championship campaign, and with Ferrari's former chief track engineer Luca Baldisserri as his race engineer, Stroll delivered a dominant performance. He secured a record fourteen race victories, including five consecutive wins, clinching the championship title with four races remaining and finishing 187 points clear. This success was accompanied by accusations of manufacturing his title through team orders. Alongside single-seaters, Stroll gained endurance experience, competing in the 2016 24 Hours of Daytona.

Formula 1 Debut and Formative Years with Williams (2017–2018)

Lance Stroll made his Formula One debut in 2017 with Williams, partnering Felipe Massa, becoming the first Canadian F1 driver since Jacques Villeneuve. His entry was supported by his father, with reports of an $80 million payment to Williams. His rookie season began with challenges, including a crash in practice for the Australian Grand Prix and early retirements. His first F1 points came at his home Canadian Grand Prix, finishing ninth. A breakthrough arrived at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Stroll secured his maiden F1 podium, finishing third. This made him the youngest rookie and second-youngest driver to reach an F1 podium at 18 years and 239 days. At the Italian Grand Prix, a strong wet qualifying saw him start second due to grid penalties, making him the youngest F1 driver to start on the front row. He finished seventh. Stroll demonstrated strong racecraft, gaining more positions on the opening lap than any other driver in 2017. He concluded his debut season twelfth in the Drivers' Championship, though Massa generally out-qualified and out-raced him. Stroll remained with Williams for the challenging 2018 season, partnered by Sergey Sirotkin. The FW41 was the slowest car on the grid. Stroll scored the team's first points with an eighth-place finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He made a rare Q3 appearance at the Italian Grand Prix, qualifying tenth and finishing ninth, contributing to Williams' only double points finish of the season. He ended the year eighteenth in the Drivers' Championship with six points.

Racing Point and Aston Martin: Growth and Key Moments (2019–Present)

For 2019, Stroll moved to Racing Point, a team acquired by his father's consortium, partnering Sergio Pérez. He scored points in Australia and, at the rain-affected German Grand Prix, an astute switch to slick tires briefly elevated him to second before finishing fourth. He ended the season fifteenth, often out-qualified by Pérez. The 2020 season with Racing Point marked a significant step. He secured his second career podium at the Italian Grand Prix, finishing third. His most notable achievement was his maiden Formula One pole position at the wet Turkish Grand Prix, becoming the first Canadian since Jacques Villeneuve in 1997. He led 32 laps but dropped to ninth due to tire graining and front wing damage. Stroll added a third podium at the Sakhir Grand Prix, capitalizing on Mercedes' tire issues. Despite a strong start, including being fourth in the Drivers' Championship after eight races, his year was affected by retirements, a heavy crash, and a positive COVID-19 test. He concluded the season eleventh with 75 points. The team rebranded to Aston Martin for 2021, with Stroll partnered by Sebastian Vettel. He achieved a sixth-place finish in Qatar and a tenth in Bahrain. A high-speed tire failure in Azerbaijan and a first-lap collision in Hungary were notable incidents. He finished thirteenth in the Drivers' Championship. In 2022, Stroll continued with Vettel, scoring points in several races, including a best of sixth in Singapore. At the United States Grand Prix, he started fifth and ran third before a high-speed collision with Fernando Alonso. He finished fifteenth in the Drivers' Championship. The 2023 season saw Stroll partner Fernando Alonso. He faced an immediate challenge, missing pre-season testing due to a cycling accident resulting in fractured wrists and a broken toe. Despite lingering pain, he returned for the Bahrain Grand Prix, qualifying eighth and finishing sixth. He achieved his best result of the year with a fourth-place finish at the Australian Grand Prix. Highlights included qualifying third at the São Paulo Grand Prix and finishing fifth in both São Paulo and Las Vegas, gaining nine positions. However, a heavy qualifying crash in Singapore and a demotion from points in Qatar due to track limits were also part of his season. He concluded 2023 in a career-best tenth place in the World Drivers' Championship with 74 points. While Alonso significantly outscored and out-qualified him, team principal Mike Krack defended his performance, stating there was "not a marked gap." The 2024 season included a sixth-place finish in Australia and a seventh at his home Canadian Grand Prix. However, it also featured a crash in Saudi Arabia, a 10-second penalty for colliding with Daniel Ricciardo in China, and a retirement in the Miami sprint after contact with his teammate. An error-strewn weekend in Brazil, including a qualifying crash and beaching his car in the gravel, marked a challenging period. He finished the season thirteenth overall. Stroll was confirmed for 2025. Early in the 2025 season, he secured a sixth-place finish in Australia and a ninth in China. He later withdrew from the Spanish Grand Prix due to a hand injury, attributed to pain related to his 2023 surgery.

Technical Strengths and Driving Style

Stroll has demonstrated adaptability in challenging conditions, exemplified by strategic tire calls in the 2019 German Grand Prix and his pole in the wet 2020 Turkish Grand Prix. His 2017 season highlighted a strength in race starts, gaining more positions on the opening lap than any other driver. He has also shown capability in making up positions during races, such as his drive from the pit lane to ninth (later seventh) at the 2023 United States Grand Prix and gaining nine places to finish fifth in Las Vegas. Occasional strong qualifying performances, like third in São Paulo 2023 and fifth in the US 2022, underscore his potential for outright pace. His resilience was evident in 2023, competing despite significant wrist injuries by adopting a "relaxed style of driving."

Team Relationships

Stroll's career has been closely linked to his father's investments in motorsport, from junior categories to Formula One teams. This dynamic has drawn scrutiny, such as accusations of team orders during his 2016 F3 season. In F1, he has partnered experienced drivers including Felipe Massa, Sergio Pérez, Sebastian Vettel, and Fernando Alonso. While often out-qualified by teammates, team principal Mike Krack defended his 2023 performance against Alonso. Stroll has also experienced on-track incidents with teammates, including a first-lap collision with Alonso in Bahrain 2023 and a penalty for dangerous defending against Vettel in São Paulo 2022.

Championships and Key Statistics

Lance Stroll's junior career included championship victories in the 2014 Italian F4, 2015 Toyota Racing Series, and 2016 FIA Formula 3 European Championship. In Formula One, as of the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix, he has achieved one pole position and three podium finishes. His maiden F1 podium in 2017 made him the second-youngest driver and youngest rookie to achieve this. He is also the youngest F1 driver to start on the front row (2017 Italian GP) and the first Canadian to take pole since Jacques Villeneuve (2020 Turkish GP). Stroll achieved his career-best World Drivers' Championship ranking in 2023, finishing tenth overall. He is contracted to Aston Martin until at least the end of the 2026 season.

Legacy and Other Racing Endeavors

Beyond Formula One, Stroll has participated in two editions of the 24 Hours of Daytona (2016, 2018). It was announced in April 2026 that he would compete in the first round of the 2026 GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup, indicating a continued interest in sports car racing.
