About Clive Puzey

Early Career and National Racing Endeavors

Clive Puzey, born on July 11, 1941, in Bulawayo, Rhodesia, embarked on his motorsport journey within the competitive landscape of the South African Formula One Championship. His entry into this regional series commenced in 1963, where he campaigned a Lotus 18/21. Demonstrating early promise, Puzey achieved a notable seventh-place finish in the Rand Grand Prix the following year, in 1964, signaling his capability within the national racing scene. This period established his presence as a participant in a significant regional Formula One-spec series, laying the groundwork for his subsequent aspirations.

Formula One World Championship Attempt

Puzey's ambition to compete at the pinnacle of motorsport materialized in 1965 with his sole attempt at a Formula One World Championship Grand Prix. He entered the 1965 South African Grand Prix, fielding his own Lotus-Climax. Despite his entry, Puzey ultimately failed to pre-qualify for the event, preventing him from starting the race. This attempt positioned him as one of only six drivers hailing from Rhodesia—a territory now encompassing modern-day Zambia and Zimbabwe—to enter a World Championship Formula One race, underscoring the rarity of such an achievement for a driver from that region. His participation, though brief, marked his engagement with the sport's highest tier.

Continued National Competition and Post-Racing Life

Following his World Championship attempt, Clive Puzey continued his involvement in the South African Formula One Championship. He remained an active competitor in the series until 1969, consistently participating in the regional Formula One-spec events. A highlight of this period came in 1966, where Puzey secured three podium finishes, demonstrating his sustained competitive form within the championship. Upon concluding his racing career, Puzey transitioned into a different professional endeavor. He established and operated a garage in his hometown of Bulawayo, a business he managed until the year 2000. Beyond his professional life, Puzey became a vocal critic of Robert Mugabe's government. His outspoken stance led to repeated threats, ultimately compelling him to leave his home country and relocate to Australia, marking a significant personal chapter after his motorsport career.
