About Emanuele Pirro

Emanuele Pirro, born on January 12, 1962, is an Italian racing driver whose career spans an impressive breadth of motorsport disciplines, from Formula One to dominant stints in touring cars and endurance racing. While his Formula One tenure was relatively brief, Pirro established himself as a formidable competitor, particularly in sportscar racing where he achieved legendary status with five victories at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans and two wins at the 12 Hours of Sebring, primarily with Audi. Over his extensive career, Pirro has competed in more than 500 official national and international races, securing over 90 victories, underscoring a remarkable consistency and versatility behind the wheel.

Early Career and Single-Seater Foundations

Pirro's motorsport journey began in karting, where he honed his skills for seven years, culminating in two Italian Karting Championships in 1976 and 1979, alongside achieving runner-up positions in both the European and World Karting Championships. This strong foundation propelled him into car racing in 1980, where his talent quickly shone through. He secured the Formula Fiat Abarth Championship in his debut year. His progression through the single-seater ranks was marked by success, as he went on to win races in every feeder series he contested, including Formula 3, Formula 3000, and Formula Nippon, demonstrating an innate ability to adapt and excel across different machinery and competitive environments.

Formula 1 Endeavor

Pirro's path to Formula One was paved through a significant test driver role. In 1988, he was contracted by McLaren to contribute to the development of the new Honda powertrain for the formidable MP4/4 chassis, a role he maintained for three subsequent seasons. This period provided invaluable experience at the pinnacle of motorsport technology. His Formula One race debut came at the 1989 French Grand Prix, where he stepped in for the Benetton-Ford team, replacing Johnny Herbert, who was recovering from injuries sustained in a Formula 3000 accident. Pirro continued his Formula One racing for the 1990 and 1991 seasons with BMS Scuderia Italia. While his F1 racing career was a challenging chapter, it provided crucial experience that would inform his subsequent successes in other categories.

Dominance in Touring Car Racing

Concurrent with his single-seater commitments, Pirro forged a highly successful career in touring car racing. He served as a factory driver for BMW until 1993, competing and winning in various prestigious championships including the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC), World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), Italian Supertouring, and the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM). Notably, he achieved the rare feat of winning in his DTM debut. His tenure with BMW saw him secure significant victories, including the 24 Hours Nürburgring, two wins at the Macau Guia Race, and an impressive four victories at the Wellington 500, often driving the iconic BMW M3 E30 with Team Schnitzer. Following his departure from BMW in 1993, Pirro transitioned to Audi, where he continued his winning ways, clinching the Italian Touring Car Championships in 1994 and 1995, and subsequently the German Touring Car Championship (Super Tourenwagen Cup) in 1996. His consistency during this period was remarkable; between 1994 and 1996, across 70 races in the Italian and German Supertouring championships, he finished outside the top-ten only once, a testament to his unwavering performance.

Endurance Racing Prowess

Emanuele Pirro's name is most synonymous with endurance racing, a discipline he first encountered at the young age of 19. His early experiences included a class win at the 24 Hours of Daytona with a Lancia Beta Montecarlo Gr.5 and a victory at the Kyalami 9 Hours. After sporadic appearances in Japan with Group C cars like the Nissan and Porsche 962, his return to Le Mans in 1998 with a McLaren F1 marked the beginning of a legendary era. In 1999, with the introduction of the Audi R8R, Pirro began an extraordinary run of nine consecutive podium finishes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The year 2000 heralded the first of three consecutive overall victories at Le Mans with the new Audi R8, sharing the triumph with Tom Kristensen and Frank Biela. His innovative spirit and technical adaptability were further highlighted in 2006 when, alongside Frank Biela and Marco Werner, he became the first driver to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a diesel-powered car, a feat they repeated in 2007. Pirro concluded his official Audi sportscar racing career in 2008, having amassed an incredible record: five 24 Hours of Le Mans victories, two American Le Mans Series championships, two 12 Hours of Sebring wins, and three Petit Le Mans triumphs. Even after 2008, he continued to compete in select endurance events, including the 12 Hours of Sebring and 24 Hours of Le Mans with Drayson Racing in a Lola-Judd LMP1, the 24 Hours Nürburgring with an Audi R8 GT3, and the 2011 Gold Coast 500 in the Australian V8 Supercars Championship.
