About François Mazet

Early Racing Endeavors

François Mazet, born on February 24, 1943, in Paris, France, embarked on his racing career demonstrating early promise in junior formulae. His talent was particularly evident in 1969 when he secured the French Formula Three Championship title. This victory was achieved driving a Tecno chassis, marking a significant milestone in his nascent career. Following his success in Formula Three, Mazet progressed to Formula Two (F2) for the 1970 season. He joined the Sports Motor team, where he competed alongside Tim Schenken. This transition to F2, however, was not described as a successful period for Mazet. Despite the challenges, his career continued with support from Shell Petroleum. During this time, he had the opportunity to race Jo Siffert's F2 Chevron whenever Siffert was unavailable. Concurrently, Mazet also participated in touring car events, competing for Ford Germany, diversifying his racing experience across different disciplines.

Formula One Opportunity

Mazet's association with Jo Siffert proved instrumental in opening the door to Formula One. This connection ultimately led to his sole appearance in a Formula One World Championship Grand Prix. In 1971, Mazet was given the opportunity to drive a March 701 for Siffert's team at his home race, the French Grand Prix, held at Paul Ricard. This event marked his only attempt at Formula One. During his single Grand Prix outing, Mazet completed the race, finishing in 13th position. Despite crossing the finish line, he did not score any championship points, as per the regulations of the time. This solitary appearance provided a brief glimpse of Mazet's presence at the pinnacle of motorsport.

Post-Racing Career and Legacy

Upon concluding his active racing career, François Mazet remained connected to the motorsport world, albeit in a different capacity. In the 1980s, he played a role in facilitating sponsorship deals within Formula One, specifically being involved in the sponsorship of the Lotus team by Essex Petroleum. This demonstrated his continued engagement with the sport's commercial aspects after his competitive driving days. Beyond motorsport, Mazet transitioned into a distinct and rather unique post-career endeavor. He established an orchard in Menton, where he now cultivates lemons. His involvement in this agricultural pursuit has led to multiple press appearances, through which he actively promotes the fruit he grows. This later chapter of his life showcases a notable shift from the high-octane world of racing to a more tranquil, yet publicly engaged, role.
