About Esteban Gutiérrez

Early Career Foundations

Esteban Gutiérrez embarked on his racing journey in 2004, initially competing in the Mexican Rotax Max Challenge. His karting career saw him achieve a third-place finish at the Grand Nationals in South Bend, Indiana, in 2005, which secured him a spot at the World Finals in Malaysia. The following year, 2006, he dominated the Camkart Challenge Mexico, winning all five races. Gutiérrez transitioned to single-seater racing in 2007, entering the Formula BMW USA series. He quickly demonstrated his potential, securing second place overall in the championship. This impressive debut season included four victories, eight podium finishes, nine pole positions, and three fastest laps, earning him Rookie of the Year honors. In 2008, Gutiérrez moved to Europe, competing in the inaugural Formula BMW Europe championship. He clinched the title by a significant 26-point margin over his closest rival, Marco Wittmann. His championship campaign was marked by seven wins, six of which were consecutive, alongside an additional five podium appearances. This achievement made him the youngest Mexican driver to win an International Championship at just 17 years old. He concluded his Formula BMW career with a third-place finish at the 2008 World Final in Mexico City. In 2009, Gutiérrez progressed to the Formula 3 Euro Series with ART Grand Prix. He finished ninth overall, securing two podium finishes at the Nürburgring and Dijon Prenois. He also made appearances in two rounds of the British Formula 3 season, where he achieved a podium and a fastest lap at the Algarve International Circuit, competing against future F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo. The year 2010 marked a significant milestone as Gutiérrez joined the GP3 Series with ART Grand Prix. He dominated the inaugural season, sealing the championship with two races remaining. His performance included five wins, eight podium finishes, and points scored in ten out of sixteen races, showcasing a commanding championship victory. Gutiérrez's progression continued into the GP2 Series. After testing a GP2 car in 2009, he was signed for a full season in 2011 with Lotus ART, the rebranded ART Grand Prix. In the 2011 GP2 Asia series, he finished eleventh. In the main GP2 series, he secured his first victory in the Valencia sprint race, along with a fastest lap and a second-place finish in Hungary, ultimately placing 13th in the drivers' championship. Remaining with Lotus GP for 2012, Gutiérrez delivered a strong season, finishing third in the championship. This made him the first GP3 graduate to achieve a top-three finish in the parent GP2 series, accumulating 176 points, three wins, four additional podiums, and five fastest laps, matching the season's highest tally for fastest laps.

Formula One Debut and Formative Years

Esteban Gutiérrez's association with Formula One began early, with his first test in a BMW Sauber F1 car in December 2009 as a prize for his Formula BMW Europe championship win. He subsequently joined Sauber as an observer for race weekends in 2010 and was officially named the team's test and reserve driver on September 10, 2010. His talent was further recognized during the young drivers test in Abu Dhabi, where he posted the fourth fastest time. In 2012, he participated in a free practice session at the Indian Grand Prix, deputizing for an unwell Sergio Pérez, recording the twentieth fastest time. In 2013, Gutiérrez was promoted to a full-time race seat with Sauber, partnering Nico Hülkenberg. His debut at the Australian Grand Prix saw him qualify eighteenth and finish thirteenth, marking him as the best-placed rookie. He continued to show promise in Malaysia, qualifying fourteenth and finishing twelfth. A notable moment came at the Spanish Grand Prix where he achieved his first fastest lap, placing him second in the record books for the 'Youngest Driver to Set a Fastest Lap' at that time, behind Nico Rosberg. The highlight of his 2013 season, and indeed his Formula One career, occurred at the Japanese Grand Prix. Starting fourteenth, Gutiérrez navigated the field to secure his first and only points-scoring finish, crossing the line in seventh place and successfully defending against Nico Rosberg in the closing stages. Despite this, he lost his drive at the end of the 2014 season. Following his departure from Sauber, Gutiérrez joined Scuderia Ferrari as their test and reserve driver for the 2015 Formula One season, a role he took over from the late Jules Bianchi. This period allowed him to remain embedded within a top-tier F1 operation.

Return to Racing and Post-F1 Endeavors

Gutiérrez made his return to a Formula One race seat in 2016, joining the newly formed Haas F1 Team alongside Romain Grosjean. While the season did not yield points, he demonstrated competitive pace on several occasions. He finished fourteenth at the Chinese Grand Prix, notably passing his former teammate Nico Hülkenberg. Throughout the season, Gutiérrez frequently found himself on the cusp of the points, securing eleventh-place finishes at Monaco, Austria, Germany, and Singapore, and a twelfth-place finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. On November 11, 2016, he confirmed his departure from Haas F1 Team. After his second stint in Formula One, Gutiérrez explored other racing disciplines. In 2017, he competed in selected races of the Formula E season with Techeetah, achieving two top-ten finishes and scoring five points across three ePrix events (Mexico City, Monaco, and Paris). Later that year, he also made appearances in the IndyCar Series, participating in seven events for Dale Coyne Racing as a substitute for the injured Sébastien Bourdais. Since 2018, Gutiérrez has been an integral part of the Mercedes-AMG Formula One team, initially joining as a simulator driver. His role expanded to include reserve driver duties for both Formula 1 and Formula E. Although a super licence eligibility issue arose in 2020 due to new requirements, he has continued his association with Mercedes as a brand and business ambassador since 2021, actively contributing to car development and supporting the race drivers. During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Gutiérrez also ventured into esports, participating in high-profile virtual events such as the F1 Esports Virtual Grand Prix Series and The Race All Stars. He achieved multiple wins and podium finishes, demonstrating his competitive spirit in a new format. Beyond his ambassadorial role, Esteban Gutiérrez is also an entrepreneur, having founded EDASI Drive, a licensed Formula One merchandise distributor for Latin America. His career showcases a journey through various motorsport categories, culminating in a significant role within a leading Formula One team and entrepreneurial ventures.
