About Gerry Ashmore
Early Forays in Formula Junior
Joseph Frederick Harold Gerald Ashmore, known within the motorsport community as Gerry Ashmore, was a British motor racing driver hailing from England. Born on 25 July 1936, Ashmore embarked on his competitive racing career in 1960, entering the Formula Junior category. He shared this early endeavor with his brother, Chris, indicating a familial passion for the sport. Ashmore's nascent talent was quickly evidenced later in 1960 through his performances at events held in Zeltweg and Innsbruck. At one of these competitive outings, he secured a commendable third-place finish. This podium result placed him directly behind two highly respected figures in motorsport, Hans Herrmann and Wolfgang von Trips, signaling his potential to contend with established international drivers even in his formative years.
Stepping into Formula One
Following his promising displays in Formula Junior, Gerry Ashmore made the significant step up to Formula One in 1961. For his entry into the pinnacle of motorsport, he campaigned a privately run Lotus 18, a common route for aspiring drivers during that era. While his World Championship appearances were limited, Ashmore demonstrated his capabilities in non-championship events. Notably, in 1961, Ashmore competed in the Naples Grand Prix, a prominent non-championship Formula One race. Here, he delivered a standout performance, securing pole position against a competitive field. He then translated this qualifying pace into a strong race result, finishing in an impressive second place. This achievement underscored his ability to extract performance from his machinery and compete at a high level. His involvement in the Formula One World Championship officially commenced later in 1961 at his home event, the British Grand Prix. However, his debut was unfortunately curtailed, as he retired from the race after completing only a few laps. Ashmore's final appearance in a Formula One World Championship event occurred in 1962. Driving his Lotus at Monza, he attempted to qualify for the Grand Prix but ultimately failed to secure a spot on the starting grid. In total, Gerry Ashmore participated in four Formula One World Championship Grands Prix during his career, though he did not score any championship points.
A Life in Racing and Beyond
After his active racing career, Gerry Ashmore remained a figure from a significant era of motorsport. He passed away on 25 August 2021 at the age of 85. His death was attributed to cancer, bringing to a close the life of a driver who, for a brief period, competed on the world stage of Formula One and showed flashes of considerable talent in his early career.
