Stebro
About Stebro
Origins
Stebro was a Canadian Formula 1 entry constructed by Pierre Stebbings, an Ottawa-based amateur racer and engineer. The team appeared exactly once in the World Championship — at the 1963 United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen — with a Ford four-cylinder engine in a self-built chassis.
Golden Era
There was no golden era. The Stebro driven by Peter Broeker qualified last and finished seventh — twenty-two laps down. That single race was the entirety of Stebro's Formula 1 record.
Legendary Cars
The single Stebro chassis built for the 1963 entry survives in private hands; it was a competent enough club-racing-derived design but utterly outmatched by the works Lotus, Ferrari and BRM cars at Watkins Glen.
Lows and Reinventions
The team did not return for 1964 or any subsequent F1 season. Pierre Stebbings continued building cars for Canadian regional categories but never reattempted Grand Prix racing.
Modern Era
Stebro is remembered as one of the more obscure single-attempt constructors in Formula 1 history — a Canadian amateur effort that put a home-built chassis on a championship grid for one race only. The car itself is preserved as a piece of Canadian motorsport heritage, occasionally appearing at historic events in Ontario.
