About Lotus-Borgward
Origins
Lotus-Borgward refers to a single-event-class footnote where a Lotus chassis was entered with a Borgward 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine. The Borgward unit had achieved success in F2 with Hans Herrmann's German programme, and after Borgward's 1961 collapse the engines circulated among privateers, occasionally finding their way into Lotus customer hulls during the transition to F1's 1.5-litre formula.
Scope
The combination is confined to minimal entries with no championship points. Lotus customer chassis of the period were primarily Climax-powered, and the Borgward installation was an oddity rather than a sustained programme.
Legacy
Lotus-Borgward is one of the constructor ledger's most marginal entries — it survives as evidence that a Borgward-powered Lotus took a world championship start, nothing more. The wider Lotus story belongs to the works Climax and Ford-Cosworth eras; this label sits as a footnote alongside the other engine permutations that briefly appeared at the dawn of the 1.5-litre years.
