About De Tomaso-Ferrari
Origins
The De Tomaso-Ferrari label refers to early-1960s privateer attempts to combine a De Tomaso chassis with Ferrari V6 engine hardware obtained second-hand from Italian sources. Like the Cooper-Ferrari pairings of the same period, it reflected the fluid market for Maranello-derived powerplants once Ferrari's own works supply patterns shifted away from earlier customer arrangements.
Scope
The entries amount to a handful of starts with no championship points scored. The combination was always compromised by the De Tomaso chassis's limited development and the difficulty of integrating a Ferrari engine into a hull not designed for it.
Legacy
De Tomaso-Ferrari is one of the obscure permutations the constructor ledger preserves to document the early-1960s grid's diversity. The same De Tomaso chassis line would later achieve far more visibility in 1970 when Frank Williams ran a Cosworth-powered version for Piers Courage — the tragic Zandvoort accident that killed Courage being the most-remembered moment of the De Tomaso F1 story.
